Bournemouth University UNIX User Group

Welcome to bunix.org.uk!

About BUNIX

We are a group of students, graduates and staff of Bournemouth University mixed in with a healthy dose of local professionals and general interested geeks who started to meet to discuss and learn about UNIX, Linux, BSD and Apple Mac OS X. However, now we are branching out into all areas of computing, not just UNIX. The name remains as a legacy! Think of BUNIX as a forum for computing and technology based discussion and a meeting place for like minded people.

We meet once a month on Talbot campus, Bournemouth. The group was founded in November 2008 by Edd Barrett and Luke Middlewick and is now chaired by Dan Wentworth and Rob Brondson.

This is our wiki, which anyone may edit, however please see the ground rules.

Check out the members page to see who we are.

Getting Involved

The best ways to get involved are to join us on the mailing list and IRC:

  • The mailing list is hosted by Google Groups. We arrange our monthly meetings and ask computing related questions here. You can subscribe via the web interface or by sending an empty email to bunix+subscribe@googlegroups.com and following the instructions in the automated reply.
  • The IRC channel is hosted on the blitzed.org network. A bunch of us hang about here and talk about computing related stuff and paste off-topic URL's for our own personal amusement. You are welcome to join us. Check out the IRC channel Page for details.
  • Join our LinkedIn group.
  • Come to a meeting! (more details below)
  • Do you like TeeWorlds? We sure do. And we run our own server. Details here .

After joining the mailing list or IRC, please feel free to introduce yourself and tell us your areas of interest.

If anyone would like to give a talk but isn't sure what to talk about we have some discussion ideas.

Meeting Place

BUNIX meets on the 2nd Friday of every month. We currently meet in P236, Talbot Campus, Bournemouth University. The room can be found on the second floor of the main building (Poole House), it is towards the front of the second floor of the building at the very end of the corridor. Currently the room is equipped with SunRay machines making it stand out above the other seminar rooms/labs in the building.

Unfortunately it seems the room will soon be devoid of the SunRay machines at the loss of UNIX within the University. We have put together a quick page on why we feel UNIX is important in academic institutions.

If your randomly using the SunRay lab we've put together some hints on using the sunrays.
